Reviews Word on the street for the Sony SLT A77

10.0
The continuous shooting speed of 12fps at full resolution when using the EVF or in Live View mode is amazing for a prosumer camera, especially one with so many megapixels, while Sony's long-standing D-Range Optimizer and HDR functions help to even out tricky exposures, for example where a bright background would normally throw the foreground into deep shadow.

9.0
While it’s 12fps continuous shooting speed will certainly appeal to those who regularly shoot fast-moving action, there’s a lot more to like about the A77, not least the speedy AF performance, excellent range of movie recording options and high standard of image quality.

8.2
For the LCD, Sony created a fairly complex mechanism to enable its LCD to tilt as well as swivel.

8.0
That said, when weighing these up against a superb level of image quality when shooting in most conditions, great handling, good build quality, industry-leading EVF, quick full-time phase detection AF system and a comprehensive set of exposure modes, we have little trouble with recommending this excellent camera.

What People Are Saying Give it to me straight

Lens

Sony has good lenses — I tested the A77 with a 50mm f/1.4 macro lens and a 70-300mm f/4.5 zoom, and liked both — but they’re expensive, and there aren’t nearly as many available as you’d get with Nikon or Canon.

Speaking of lenses, whenever you’re buying a camera it’s crucial to consider the ecosystem you’re buying into.
by David-Pierce (Apr, 2012)
It's unavailable in shutter/aperture-priority or manual modes.

Sensor

You can set the aperture, shutter speed and ISO by changing to Single focus mode, but you then lose the ability to refocus between frames.
by Photography Blog (Dec, 2011)
You can also customize the range of the Auto ISO setting, which every camera company ought to allow.
by David-Pierce (Apr, 2012)
These results show that noise is well controlled up to a sensitivity of ISO 3200, above this sensitivity value noise starts to become more apparent, but images still have lots of detail.
by TechRadar (Nov, 2011)

Viewfinder

We're pleased to report that the Sony Alpha A77's offering is leaps and bounds ahead of anything we've experienced before, with a very impressive 1.3cm, 2,359,296-dot resolution OLED screen that provides the closest performance to an optical viewfinder that we've had the pleasure of using to date.
by TechRadar (Nov, 2011)
Colors are accurate and clear (even though they don't always look it in the viewfinder), and details are remarkably well-produced — even shadows and reflections in windows came out crystal clear.
by David-Pierce (Apr, 2012)
If you are faced with a situation where using the LCD is tricky or undesirable, the EVF provides a perfectly viable alternative.
by TechRadar (Nov, 2011)

Focus

For instance, you can perform exposure bracketing in either a continuous burst or shot-by-shot, with up to a five-shot bracket.
by c|net (Jan, 2012)
When it is activated, though, the continuous AF works pretty well, changing focus quickly but smoothly and rarely locking onto the wrong subject.
by David-Pierce (Apr, 2012)
That’s the awesome advantage of an SLT camera: since it’s reflecting light to the autofocus sensor at all times, even while capturing a photo, the continuous autofocus is insanely fast.
by David-Pierce (Apr, 2012)

Screen

The big half-inch display is filled with 2.4 million dots, offers 100 percent frame coverage, and is really sharp and clear.
by David-Pierce (Apr, 2012)
The screen offers a sharp and detailed image with plenty of colour and contrast although it is prone to fingerprint smudges, which necessitates regular cleaning.

Sony's iSweep Panorama technology is the best there is for creating one-touch ultra-wideangle images.
