Reviews Word on the street for the Sony SLT A35

7.3
The Sony SLT A35's sensor is APS-C size and therefore you can't quite create the same depth of field effects as on a full-frame-camera such as the Canon EOS 5D Mark II but you still get a much shallower, more cinematic depth of field (and much better image quality) than most camcorders or any digital compact camera.

9.0
The screen is lovely and bright and works very well in direct sunlight.

What People Are Saying Give it to me straight

Sensor

Setting focus set to 'single' mode gains you the ability to shift the aperture/shutter speed settings and adjust ISO but you lose the ability to refocus between shots, making the mode less useful for many applications.
by DPReview (Sep, 2011)
Edge definition is excellent and this trend continues through the stages to around ISO 1600 where salt and pepper noise is starting to become distracting.
by Photography Blog (Aug, 2011)
The 16 megapixels should produce moderately good pictures, but they're stunning.
by Photography Blog (Aug, 2011)

Focus

This should ensure more accurate continuous AF performance than on a conventional DSLR, since the camera is constantly being fed data with which to make the necessary calculations.
by DPReview (Sep, 2011)
But, because of the shallow depth-of-field offered by large sensor cameras (and depending on the subject) shooting video with AF is not always recommendable.
by DPReview (Sep, 2011)
The result is a full-time live view camera that can offer fast, DSLR-style phase-detection autofocus and complete consistency of behavior regardless of whether you're using the eye-level viewfinder or the rear screen for viewing.
by DPReview (Sep, 2011)

Video

In AVCHD mode the A35 offers high quality HD video capture at 1920 x 1080 pixels (1080p) at 25/30 frames per second (depending on whether your camera is a PAL or NTSC model), though the files are doubled up to 1080 i at 50/60 fps for HDTV compatibility.
by DPReview (Sep, 2011)
On the left shoulder is the A35's exposure mode dial, which provides access to the standard PASM shooting modes as well as the high-speed 7 fps AE setting, Sweep Panorama and the new Picture Effects.

Below you'll find examples of videos taken with the camera for you to download and draw your own conclusions.
by DPReview (Sep, 2011)

Screen

The screen features a TruBlack coating which is a gel coating that sits in between the LCD and the glass.
by Photography Blog (Aug, 2011)
Its viewfinder projects far enough behind the camera to avoid squashing your face against the LCD screen, and an efficient switch immediately activates the LCD as soon as you remove your eye from the EVF.
by DPReview (Sep, 2011)
That said, with files this big you would need to be looking very close for this to be a major issue in a print or on-screen.
by DPReview (Sep, 2011)

Lens

This is usual for any lens but the Sony still manages to produce some crisp shots.
by Photography Blog (Aug, 2011)
If you decide to get the kit lens, don't expect too much in terms of build quality but it produces sharp pictures which is the important thing.
by Photography Blog (Aug, 2011)
The camera's movie mode lacks manual control over shutter speed and aperture (if you shoot with manual focus you can set the aperture before you start recording) but nevertheless still offers some scope for creative control.
