Sony NEX 7

Released August, 2011
Rumored: NEX 7n (Dec, 2011)
  • 24 MP
  • APS-C 23.5 x 15.6 mm CMOS
  • 3" LCD
With so many pixels to play with, though, there's still plenty of detail in the JPEGs - but if you want to extract the best the camera can offer, you'll definitely need to shoot RAW.

Reviews Word on the street for the Sony NEX 7

8.1
In manual focus mode, the NEX-7 uses the Focus Settings screen to engage MF assist, i.e. magnification of the live view display for more accurate focusing.

10.0
The Sony NEX-7's maximum shutter speed is 30 seconds and there's also a Bulb mode for even longer exposures, which is excellent news if you're seriously interested in night photography.

8.1
The higher resolution of the NEX-7's sensor helps to compensate for the overprocessing, as the extra pixels help retain detail in the face of heavy luminance noise reduction (NR); that's one reason the NEX-7's JPEG photos still look much better than, say, the Olympus E-P3.

8.0
The built-in OLED viewfinder is a real bonus, providing a bright, clear view, and having a hotshoe and input for an external microphone both add to the flexibility of the system.

What People Are Saying Give it to me straight

Lens

Experienced photographers may also find the limited range of E-mount lenses off-putting, depending on their intended use for the camera.
by TechRadar (Nov, 2011)
Depending upon which shooting mode you're using, these dials control the aperture, shutter speed and exposure compensation.
by Photography Blog (Jan, 2012)
A lightweight CSC with a 24.3Mp sensor may be ideally suited to landscape photographers, but the lack of a suitable wide-angle optic may be just as off-putting as the camera is tempting.
by TechRadar (Nov, 2011)

Sensor

As well as its high pixel count and 60fps 1080 output, the latest EXMOR CMOS sensor also has the ability to act as the first curtain of the shutter.
by DPReview (Dec, 2011)
Our overall conclusion from these tests is that there's no obvious reason not to enable CA and Distortion compensation, as they'll improve the camera's JPEGs without affecting RAW.
by DPReview (Dec, 2011)
Although pixel-level sharpness isn't perfect, handheld twilight mode is a quick, easy and (usually) effective way of grabbing a smooth and colorful shot in conditions where normally you'd need to use either a high ISO sensitivity setting or a tripod.
by DPReview (Dec, 2011)

Video

The effect of doing so is really noticeable, but it's pretty great to be able to adjust your video on the fly.
by David-Pierce (Feb, 2012)
Firstly, as far as the camera is concerned, movies are organized entirely separately from still images in their own 'folder' - indeed there are separate folders for each recording format (MP4 and AVCHD).
by DPReview (Dec, 2011)
You can shoot in AVCHD or MP4, though MP4 video is an odd 1440 x 1080 resolution.
by David-Pierce (Feb, 2012)

Focus

The built-in EVF and focus 'peaking' display make manual focus easy; the AF/MF button can also be configured to bring up one-touch magnified focus assist.
by DPReview (Dec, 2011)
With static subjects, the NEX-7's autofocus is generally fast and accurate.
by DPReview (Dec, 2011)
For a serious camera, the autofocus in low light is slow and inaccurate.
by TechRadar (Nov, 2011)

Screen

Higher contrast can be a good thing on an OLED display — since the display isn’t backlit, darks can be much darker and everything can have a realistic, natural glow — but the effect goes too far here.
by David-Pierce (Feb, 2012)
The 3-inch display is made up of a sharp 922,000 dots, and it recreates colors incredibly accurately.
by David-Pierce (Feb, 2012)
By default the central button opens the shooting mode dial, but it can also be reconfigured to access the new Custom screen, which by default contains the ISO, white balance, flash, creative style and image size options.
