Reviews Word on the street for the Sony Alpha DSLR-A700

7.7
It's quite a nice display, viewable in bright light, and surprisingly good for judging sharpness when you're zoomed into a photo at the camera's 13x maximum.

What People Are Saying Give it to me straight

Sensor

As you can see from the 100% crops below there's really very little difference in this comparison between JPEG from the camera, RAW converted using Image Data Converter and RAW converted using Adobe Camera RAW.
by DPReview (Dec, 2007)
For instance, you can choose how long the AF area displays, as well as set both minimum and maximum values (not just maximum) for the Auto ISO range.
by c|net (Oct, 2007)
It does an excellent job maintaining color and exposure consistency across all the ISO sensitivity settings, and photos are quite usable up to and including ISO 3,200.
by c|net (Oct, 2007)

Image quality

Metering, exposure, contrast, and saturation look excellent under a variety of lighting conditions, and the photos exhibit a broad tonal range.
by c|net (Oct, 2007)
It would be fair to say that as a baseline (at lower sensitivities) the A700 delivers very good images which demonstrate good resolution a 'standard' tone curve and natural color.
by DPReview (Dec, 2007)
In the four basic Creative Style modes (Standard, Vivid, Neutral and Adobe RGB) you can adjust contrast, saturation and sharpness.
by DPReview (Dec, 2007)

Iso

Color was predictable and neutral and tonal response was good without ever being over contrasty (nice roll-off in highlights from ISO 200 upwards).
by DPReview (Dec, 2007)
At ISO 3200 the DSLR-A700 image has become quite soft due to heavy noise reduction.
by DPReview (Dec, 2007)
Here you'll find the shutter release and front control dial plus buttons giving direct access to AE compensation (+/-), White Balance, ISO and Drive mode.
by DPReview (Dec, 2007)

Screen

In record mode you can press the Display button to toggle between the full recording mode display, 'enlarged' recording mode display (which has less information) or no display.
by DPReview (Dec, 2007)
Record review will use the last selected play mode display format.
by DPReview (Dec, 2007)
On the negative side the lack of a top panel status LCD means you have to use the power hungry rear LCD for status, the plastic body could be seen by some as a negative (although personally it didn't bother me) and of course it's the only one of the four here not to offer Live View.
by DPReview (Dec, 2007)

Lens

If you opt for a kit, the dual-lens package looks like the best value; the lenses don't add much to the cost, and together they cover a good general-purpose range.
by c|net (Oct, 2007)
Sony offers several bundles for the A700: body only; a kit with an f/3.5-to-f/5.6, 16mm-to-105mm lens slated to ship late in 2007; a kit with an f/3.5-to-f/4.6, 18mm-to-70mm lens; a kit with an f/3.5-to-f/5.6, 18mm-to-200mm lens; and a dual-lens kit with the aforementioned 18mm-to-70mm lens and a f/3.5-to-f/6.3, 75mm-to-300mm lens.
by c|net (Oct, 2007)
As with all dSLRs of this class, you control shutter speed, aperture, exposure compensation, and program shift with dials.
