Although we generally like the compositional guide of a rule-of-thirds grid, we'd recommend movie shooters should consider the 16:9 guides which mark the crop that the camera's movies are shot in.

Reviews Word on the street for the Olympus OM-D E-M5

8.0
This is essentially impossible and closer examination shows the last point at which it clearly differentiates between the lines is actually nearer 2600 (which is what you'd expect of a sensor of this resolution).

10.0
In the Natural picture mode, colours are vibrant without being garish or over-saturated, while dynamic range is very good.

9.0
Overall build quality is very high, with the E-M5’s magnesium alloy outer casing fully weather-sealed against dirt and moisture.

8.4
Color Creator, the hue/saturation color correction tool, doesn't do anything new but I think it's one of the most natural interfaces I've seen for making these adjustments.

What People Are Saying Give it to me straight

Lens

Using the higher-end kit lens, I was consistently surprised with how sharp my photos were, especially in the corners and in bad lighting.
by David-Pierce (May, 2012)
The company also claims the camera's performing more intelligent sharpening, using the MTF data from the lens to determine the correct amount of sharpening to apply, plus it theoretically offers better chromatic aberration correction, via the TruePic VII version of its image-processing engine.
by c|net (Oct, 2013)
Better still, Art Filter effects can be applied while the camera is set to any of the PASM exposure modes, which gives you full creative control over depth-of-field (via Aperture-priority) and shutter speed.
by TrustedReviews (May, 2012)

Sensor

At ISO 200, the JPEGs look excellent, although the camera frequently oversharpens - in some places where it shouldn't be sharpening at all.
by c|net (Oct, 2013)
Post-processing of Raw files also allows you to tune the sharpening and noise reduction of your image to suit the particular subject.
by DPReview (Apr, 2012)
The corresponding raw files are inevitably more noisy at lower ISOs.
by Photography Blog (May, 2012)

Image quality

The result is a camera that produces JPEGs with very competitive dynamic range, really making the most of what the sensor can capture.
by DPReview (Apr, 2012)
And, since dynamic range is the range between highlights and a specified noise level, this would be considered a boost in dynamic range.
by DPReview (Apr, 2012)
The focus is near-instant in good light and only drops off in very low light.
by DPReview (Apr, 2012)

Focus

Continuous-shooting speed also zips along nicely.
by c|net (Oct, 2013)
Like some of Olympus' recent primes, the 12-40mm f2.8 incorporates a manual focus clutch, where pulling back on the focus ring automatically puts you in manual-focus mode.
by c|net (Oct, 2013)
The manual focus ring feels a little too loose for my taste, but I got used to it.
by c|net (Oct, 2013)

Screen

That comment would be justified, perhaps, if the 3-inch 4:3 aspect ratio screen wasn't also an OLED panel, as opposed to the common-or-garden LCD variety, with a super bright 610k-dot resolution.
by Photography Blog (May, 2012)
While a fully articulated side-hinged screen would offer more flexibility the vertical movement of the E-M5’s screen does make light work of overhead and low-level shooting, and for this reason it remains preferable to a completely fixed screen.
by TrustedReviews (May, 2012)
The E-M5 then makes the screen more useful by making it tiltable and touch-senstive.
