Video and still cameras are different shapes because they have been developed to do different jobs, and the shape of an SLR camera, or indeed most compact cameras, is not particularly well suited to video shooting.

Reviews Word on the street for the Nikon D90

9.0
The viewfinder itself is very good, with a large bright screen and clearly marked AF points, and none of the tunnel-like appearance of some other APS-C sized DSLRs.

8.0
There are also the usual array of improvements and additions to shooting controls, including an expansion of Active D-Lighting parameters (you can now go extra high), nine slots for custom Picture Control settings, which can be uploaded to Nikon's Capture NX 2 raw-processing software, as well as advanced scene modes that incorporate Picture Controls and Active D-Lighting, and that can automatically program shift to slower shutter speeds when the camera knows a VR lens is attached.

10.0
It's not just the size that's impressive, but the saturation, clarity and sheer definition.

What People Are Saying Give it to me straight

Video

Movie doesn't match the best of the snapshot-camera movie modes.
by c|net (Oct, 2008)
The much talked-about video mode has its good points, but also some serious limitations.
by TrustedReviews (May, 2011)
It has the creative versatility, performance and quality to appeal to semi-professionals and advanced hobbyists, while the scene modes, live view and the video mode will appeal to gadget lovers and the more casual user who wants a good all-rounder.
by TrustedReviews (May, 2011)

Sensor

In an effort to appeal to a wide audience, the D90 features an extensive selection of in-camera retouching options, including D-lighting, red-eye correction, cropping rotating and re-sizing, filter effects, colour balance, multi-image composites and Raw processing options, among others.
by TrustedReviews (May, 2011)
At the lowest ISO setting, images are clear, sharp and noise-free.
by TrustedReviews (May, 2011)
The red channel is starting to look very blotchy at 800 ISO.
by TrustedReviews (May, 2011)

Focus

It's also the only one with Face Detect AF (there are three AF modes, wide area and normal area and face detect).
by DPReview (Oct, 2008)
The brackets indicate the chosen focus point and there is an optional 'red glow' viewfinder illumination to ensure everything remains visible even in dim light.
by DPReview (Oct, 2008)
Consequently in live view mode, focusing in lower light conditions is very slow, hunting backward and forward for several seconds before achieving focus.
by TrustedReviews (May, 2011)

Lens

There's certainly no particular 'sweet spot' in the aperture or zoom range you need to stick to.
by TechRadar (Jan, 2009)

Photography

I was very impressed by its superb build quality, creative versatility and excellent image quality, giving it 9/10 and a Recommended award.
