It is no surprise that the processed raw file, above, contains more detail, and that the detail is more naturally rendered.

Reviews Word on the street for the Nikon 1 J1

Both Nikon 1 series cameras produce good-looking video, benefiting from a metering system that produces pleasingly accurate exposures in a variety of outdoor lighting situations and renders reasonably accurate white balance.

With an essentially grip-less design, the Nikon J1 is very much a two-handed affair that requires you to hold the camera's weight in the left hand, clutching the lens, and use your right hand for balance and operating the controls.

From the 10-30mm f/3.5-5.6 kit zoom to the 10mm f/2.8 pancake lens and the 10-100mm f/4.5-5.6 video-specific lens, the new lenses perfectly compliment the new bodies, creating a very stylish and, above all, portable overall package.

Considering the size of the sensor, the Nikon J1 resolves a respectable level of detail.

Take for instance, the sensor, which is smaller and lower-resolution than all but the even-more-expensive Pentax Q. With a 2.7x focal-length magnification factor, that means the kit 10-30mm lens has the equivalent angle of view of 27-81mm.

What People Are Saying Give it to me straight

When the zoom lever is held at its minimum speed setting the result is a smooth, continuous speed zoom.
by DPReview (Jan, 2012)
This means that at any given aperture and equivalent focal length, the 1 cameras will offer less control over depth-of-field than a camera with a larger sensor.
by DPReview (Jan, 2012)
In fact, View NX2 does not even provide an option for manual distortion correction.

During our time experimenting with the J1 and V1's highest-speed capture mode we found that just as in normal still image shooting, when set to their high-speed modes they still prefer to set a shutter speed of 1/60sec and a relatively low ISO setting rather than faster shutter speeds at higher ISO settings.
by DPReview (Jan, 2012)
You don't have any control over shutter speed, aperture or ISO but you can apply exposure compensation.
by DPReview (Jan, 2012)

At f/5.6, if the light is lower than 9EV (approx) AF is driven using a contrast-detection system, and at roughly 10EV and above, phase-detection AF is used.
by DPReview (Jan, 2012)
In good light, the Nikon J1 is indeed as fast as anything out there when it comes to auto-focus speed.
by Photography Blog (Oct, 2011)
The Nikon J1 is a stylish looking compact system camera that delivers class-leading shooting speeds, super-efficient AF performance and vibrant, punchy images.
by TrustedReviews (Sep, 2012)

In addition to being capable of shooting regular movies in HD quality, the Nikon 1 J1 can also shoot video at 400fps for slow-motion playback.
by Photography Blog (Oct, 2011)
The 1 System cameras offer impressive video specifications but the user experience in video mode isn't as fluid as we'd like.
by DPReview (Jan, 2012)
The video quality is also quite good: sharp and saturated.

Image quality

As we'd expect from Nikon's DSLR and Coolpix ranges the cameras' auto WB behavior consistently produces generally accurate colors and natural, attractive skin tones, too.
by DPReview (Jan, 2012)
Ultimately, the photo quality is very good-and occasionally excellent.
by c|net (Sep, 2011)
There is some variation, but generally the colours are fairly natural-looking, if slightly on the warm side, with just enough saturation to give them a bit of punch.
