  • APS-C 22.3 x 14.9 mm CMOS

It's also built incredibly well and the video mode, while not perfect, is better than any other HD-DSLR we've seen, thanks to its excellent quality, full manual control and 24p frame rate.

Reviews Word on the street for the Canon EOS 7D

8.2
Its excellent EVF, versatile and intuitive live view and AF system, and its solid, reassuringly well thought-out operational ergonomics are all better reasons to buy this camera.

9.0
The M-Fn , or Multi-function, button is a new addition to the top of the camera, which toggles through the five different AF area choices after pressing the AF Point select button The AF areas are Manual AF, Spot AF, AF point expansion, Automatic AF point selection and Zone AF, and they can also be selected via the Quick Control Screen menu.

10.0
With an 18-megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor and a price tag of £1,500 body-only the 7D hits the mark perfectly.

9.0
Quality is unbelievable – sharp, with rich colours that, with the frame frozen, may as well have been still images.

8.5
The higher-resolution sensor necessarily has extremely small pixels, which never bodes well for image quality.

What People Are Saying Give it to me straight

Lens

These images were taken with the DT 16-50mm F2.8 SSM kit lens but each lens will have its own particular CA characteristics.
by DPReview (Oct, 2011)
On one hand, the 5DMII's photo quality remains superior across the board, and the benefits of getting true wide angle on a full-frame camera shouldn't be understated.
by c|net (Dec, 2009)
Otherwise it almost goes without saying – the 7D's image quality is almost beyond reproach, and its chief limiting factor will be your abilities as a photographer and the lens you partner with the body.
by TechRadar (Dec, 2011)

Sensor

In practice this means that, if the function is activated, Shading compensation will be applied to your output images when converting raw files in Adobe Camera Raw, Sony's IDC or any other raw converter.
by DPReview (Oct, 2011)
Like Nikon's system, it incorporates a color sensor in addition to a light sensor, plus it works in conjunction with the AF sensors in order to better weight the importance of the subject in metering decisions.
by c|net (Dec, 2009)
You can see detailed examples of the difference made by shooting raw on this page.
by DPReview (Oct, 2011)

Focus

Wildlife and sports photographers, however, will find that the EOS 7D gives better results once they have learned how to set up its rather complex AF system to suit them and the subject.
by TechRadar (Dec, 2011)
In most shooting situations, its AF system is accurate and reliable, and with one of Sony's newer internal-focussing SSM lenses it is at least as quick and silent as we've come to expect from Canon's USM and Nikon's high-end AF-S systems.
by DPReview (Oct, 2011)
Unlike continuous Lo and Hi, continuous advance priority AE can only be accessed via the exposure mode dial.
by DPReview (Oct, 2011)

Video

I suspect there are going to be a lot of people who bought the EOS 5D MkII for its HD video recording, who are now kicking themselves that they didn't wait a few months for this camera.
by TrustedReviews (Dec, 2011)
The play menu has all the options you might expect but also includes the 'View Mode' option that allows you to switch between viewing stills, MP4 movies and AVCHD movies.
by DPReview (Oct, 2011)
Image stabilization does a decent job and 'rolling shutter' effects are not visible at this panning speed.
by DPReview (Oct, 2011)

Autofocus

But you have to globally enable it, which means you then have to set it for each custom slot; otherwise, when you go vertical it will default to the dumb automatic 19-point area AF setting (which no one shooting this class of camera should use).
by c|net (Dec, 2009)
AF point expansion uses the three or four (depending upon location) points surrounding the chosen one.
by c|net (Dec, 2009)
The 7D features a new autofocus system, which is always a bit of an event for Canon.
