  • Full frame 35.8 x 23.9 mm CMOS

I'm extremely impressed with the EOS 6D's photo quality; it delivers excellent JPEG processing and noise reduction, great dynamic range and tonal quality, and accurate colors if you change the defaults.

Reviews Word on the street for the Canon EOS 6D

8.3
Set to its 'silent' drive mode the 6D is also wonderfully quiet and discreet - great if you don't want to draw attention to yourself while shooting.

9.0
We would have liked to have seen an articulated LCD screen for easier composition, and the auto-focus system for movies is still decidedly clunky when compared to mirrorless cameras, but otherwise the 6D handles both stills and video with aplomb.

8.0
When shooting in Raw, you have the choice of shooting in full resolution (i.e. 5472x3648 pixels), along with M-Raw (3468x2432 pixels) and S-Raw (2736x1824 pixels).

8.0
Looking at the size and control layout of the Canon EOS 6D quickly confirms that it is a mix of both the Canon EOS 7D and Canon EOS 60D, with the size, weight and control layout being similar to the Canon 60D but with the Canon 7D's movie and stills live view switch on its back.

What People Are Saying Give it to me straight

Sensor

JPEG shots are relatively clean through ISO 800 and still quite good through ISO 1600, even for large prints.

The ISO button that sits in the middle of the group has been moulded with a recessed textured top, making it easier to identify with your finger when you're holding the camera to your eye.
by TechRadar (Dec, 2012)
A quick tweak of the Exposure slider in Adobe Camera Raw can easily fix this however, or alternatively you can of course dial in 0.3 EV of exposure compensation.
by TrustedReviews (Jan, 2013)

Focus

Using the camera in Live View mode (to shoot either still images or record movies) automatically switches the camera’s autofocus method from phase-detection to contrast-detection, which isn’t quite as speedy as it is when shooting though the viewfinder using the traditional phase-detection autofocus method.
by TrustedReviews (Jan, 2013)
It may take them a while to get to grips with the subtleties of the camera's AF system, and they will have to remember some of the basics of metering when using the iFCL evaluative system in high contrast conditions, but they will appreciate the end results.
by TechRadar (Dec, 2012)
As default, the focus button is hidden, but once it's switched on through the settings menu, the app suddenly becomes the wireless solution we've been waiting for.
by TechRadar (Dec, 2012)

Lens

The lab tests were performed with the 24-105mm f4L IS lens, but I shot with a variety of lenses during my field tests.
by c|net (Sep, 2012)
The depth of field preview button is poorly-positioned for portrait format shooting, and the location of the power switch behind the mode dial is far less convenient than placing it around the shutter button (as Nikon, Pentax and Sony all do).
by DPReview (Feb, 2013)
Chromatic aberration (CA) is automatically reduced in JPEGs when a registered Canon lens is attached to the camera but it isn't always completely eliminated, and of course can still be a problem with third-party lenses.
by DPReview (Feb, 2013)

Image quality

Looking at the lab data, we can see that despite relatively average dynamic range scores for the JPEG files, the images themselves have good contrast and punchy.
by TechRadar (Dec, 2012)
For maximum image quality, we’d advise to stay clear of the 6D’s expanded ISO settings, although the in-camera noise reduction options for JPEGs aren’t quite as destructive as expected.
by TrustedReviews (Jan, 2013)
Even the EOS 7D feels more responsive in low light.
by c|net (Sep, 2012)

Iso

The 6D’s all-new 20.2MP sensor provides exceptional levels of detail, resolving finely spaced horizontal lines right down to 34 lines per millimeter – the equal of Nikon’s D600 at the same ISO sensitivity.
