Shooting into the sun with bright reflections off the sea is an exposure nightmare, but the additional dynamic range of the 14-bit RAW mode has coped admirably.

Reviews Word on the street for the Canon EOS 40D

9.0
Images shot at the minimum 100 ISO setting are flawlessly smooth, and even at the normal maximum of 1600 ISO the level of noise is amazingly low, and has virtually no impact on colour reproduction.

7.8
Canon also added an sRaw format, which shoots small, 2.5-megapixel raw images.

8.5
But the 40D is better made, more durable, with more features, much faster continuous shooting and a more 'professional' control layout.

What People Are Saying Give it to me straight

Sensor

At the maximum normal setting of 1600 ISO there is some noise visible, but colour reproduction is still exceptionally good.
by TrustedReviews (Feb, 2011)
In terms of tone and colour, the 40D's images are excellent, but its JPEGs aren't as good as its RAW files for definition.
by TechRadar (Oct, 2007)
While the headline megapixel count is not particularly earth-shattering at 10.1, the 40D is undoubtedly much faster and smarter than its predecessor.
by TechRadar (Sep, 2007)

Screen

while in bright sunlight it is even better.
by TrustedReviews (Feb, 2011)
Pressing the INFO button with no reviewed image displays an overview of the current camera configuration, note that the EOS 40D provides two different info displays; Normal display and Shooting function display.
by DPReview (Oct, 2007)
On the top of the camera is a mono status LCD - cheaper cameras usually display this information on the main LCD, which some users may find annoying.
by TechRadar (Oct, 2007)

Focus

Unfortunately, the AI Focus can't tell the difference between subject movement and the photographer doing a focus-and-recompose, so you're usually better off picking Single or Servo and sticking with it.

At first glance the view provided through the viewfinder hasn't changed that much, we still have the spot metering circle (about 3.5% of the frame) and nine AF points.
by DPReview (Oct, 2007)

Lens

The 40D includes a dust spot deletion feature, whereby a photo of a plain white surface is used to create a mask to hide the effects of any persistent sensor dust spots, but it proved to be incapable of correcting the effects of the dust inside the lens.

Photography

Editors' note: The competitive landscape for this camera has changed since our review, and we've updated the text and ratings to reflect that and the model's lower price.
