Canon EOS 400D

Released August, 2006
  • 10.1 MP
  • APS-C 22.2 x 14.8 mm CMOS
  • 2.5" LCD
Just like the EOS 350D the 400D is made from three main materials; a stainless steel chassis (blue in this diagram), the mirror box which is made of high-strength 'engineering plastic' (red in the diagram) and the body made of a special lightweight 'engineering plastic' which also provides some electromagnetic shielding.

Reviews Word on the street for the Canon EOS 400D

9.0
1/30th sec, F5.6, ISO 100 At 100 ISO the picture is clean, well detailed and noise free, everything we've come to expect from a Canon DSLR.

7.8
The LCD display grew from 1.8 to 2.5 inches, which essentially squeezed the status/info LCD into the ether.

9.0
In terms of looks, build and sheer usability, this tiny powerhouse of a camera borrows heavily from its acclaimed forerunner, the hugely successful and very likeable eightmegapixel 350D.

What People Are Saying Give it to me straight

Sensor

One curiosity we observed here were the larger RAW files when shooting RAW+JPEG compared to RAW.
by DPReview (Oct, 2006)
Shots taken at ISO 100 and ISO 200 were very clean, but beyond that, the photos couldn't take much retouching without drawing attention to the noise.
by c|net (Sep, 2006)
The most obvious internal improvement is the CMOS sensor, which is increased in resolution to 10.1 megapixels and now includes an automatic cleaning system, which uses a combination of an anti-static coating on the anti-aliasing filter, ultrasonic vibration and pixel mapping to ensure that dust on the sensor is less of a problem.
by TrustedReviews (Mar, 2013)

Image quality

Picture quality is simply superb.
by TechRadar (Jan, 2007)
It is extremely quick and accurate even in low light, and it would probably be even quicker if it wasn’t for the camera’s one weak point.
by TrustedReviews (Mar, 2013)
As expected no color balance issues using the internal flash although perhaps slightly under-exposed due to the flash metering picking up a reflection from the white wall.
by DPReview (Oct, 2006)

Iso

1/125th sec, F8.0, ISO 800 At 800 ISO there is some colour speckling visible in the darker areas of the frame, but on the whole image quality is still very good.
by TrustedReviews (Mar, 2013)
Other frequently used options including ISO setting, metering mode, AF mode and white balance are controlled by scrolling through a list of options using the D-pad buttons, which is again very quick and simple.
by TrustedReviews (Mar, 2013)
1/60th sec, F5.6, ISO 200 At 200 ISO the picture is virtually identical to the previous one, with no visible noise.
by TrustedReviews (Mar, 2013)

Raw

These crops clearly demonstrate that more detail is available from Digital Photo Professional and Adobe Camera RAW conversion of RAW files than can be obtained from JPEG or RAW Image Task.
by DPReview (Oct, 2006)
As is normal in our digital SLR reviews I like to compare the supplied RAW conversion software, any optional manufacturer RAW conversion software and some third party RAW converter.
by DPReview (Oct, 2006)
RAW conversion using Adobe Camera RAW delivers virtually the same results, certainly in terms of detail and resolution there's no discernable difference.
by DPReview (Oct, 2006)

Screen

Cleaning at startup is indicated by a small animated icon (shown on the left, below) and at shutdown with a full screen message (on the right, below).
by DPReview (Oct, 2006)
However the use of the LCD monitor for status display means if you wish to check your settings before shooting (as most of us do) you will have to wait just over one second.
